Easy Chocolate Depression Cake

Ingredients: Cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 teaspoon vinegar
  • 1/3 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup water

Frosting:

  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
  • 1/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 1 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 tablespoon milk or cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8×8-inch baking pan.
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, salt, and baking soda.
  3. In another bowl, combine the vanilla extract, vinegar, oil, and water. Add this mixture to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan.
  5. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cake to cool completely before frosting.

Frosting:

  1. In a small saucepan or microwave-safe bowl, melt the butter.
  2. Stir in the cocoa powder until a smooth paste forms.
  3. Transfer the cocoa paste to a medium-sized bowl. Using a mixer on low speed, gradually add the powdered sugar, milk, and vanilla extract.
  4. Increase the mixer speed to high and beat for about 5 minutes, until the frosting is smooth and creamy.
  5. Spread the frosting evenly over the cooled cake.
  6. Slice and serve the Easy Chocolate Depression Cake. Enjoy!
