To make it even better? It’s incredibly easy too! You won’t have to spend too much time in the kitchen to whip up this meal for your family. You can enjoy it as is, or top it with cheese like I’ve done with my personal bowl! If you’re a cheese-loving family like ours, you can serve the old-fashioned goulash with shredded parmesan cheese.

What is Goulash?

When people hear “Goulash,” they often think of the version that originated in Hungary centuries ago, which remains one of their most popular dishes to this day. However, the Old Fashioned goulash is the American version, essentially a hearty soup made with meat, tomatoes, and noodles. This is the version we cherish and enjoy in America. Goulash is known for being a very economical meal, suitable for anyone.

I’ve made this recipe about three times this month alone because my family just can’t get enough of it! It’s become a staple in our household—a delicious pot of yum that everyone looks forward to enjoying.

While some consider goulash to be more of a soup, I prefer mine to be thicker, resembling more of a pasta dish. If you prefer yours to have a soupier consistency, you can easily achieve that by increasing the beef broth by 1 cup.

Feel free to use any type of pasta you prefer, but I find that elbows work particularly well with this recipe!

Depending on regional preferences, some people refer to this dish as American Chop Suey!

No matter the name, it’s undeniably mouthwateringly delicious. This classic goulash recipe yields a generous batch, ensuring plenty of leftovers! It reheats beautifully, perfect for quick and satisfying lunches all week long. While leftovers can last in the fridge for up to 5 days, its irresistible flavor often means it disappears long before then.
